The Menendez Family Heritage
The story of Dona Flor begins in the 1930s when Alonso Menendez, alongside José Manuel Garcia Gonzalez, founded Menendez Garcia Sociedade Ltda. in Cuba. Their journey to success started with the creation of Monte Cristo, one of the world's most recognized premium cigar brands.
Years later, they acquired the prestigious H. Upmann brand, becoming the largest cigar producers and exporters in Cuba. However, the political changes of 1959-1960 forced the family to relocate, first to the Canary Islands and eventually to Brazil.
In 1987, Félix Menendez and Arturo Toraño created Dona Flor, naming it after the main character in Jorge Amado's famous novel "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands" — a tribute to their new home in Bahia, Brazil.
Our Journey
The Beginning
Alonso Menendez founds Menendez Garcia Sociedade Ltda. in Cuba, launching the legendary Monte Cristo brand.
H. Upmann Acquisition
The family acquires H. Upmann, becoming the largest cigar producers and exporters in Cuba.
New Horizons
After nationalization in Cuba, the family relocates to the Canary Islands, continuing their legacy.
Dona Flor is Born
Félix Menendez and Arturo Toraño create Dona Flor, inspired by Jorge Amado's famous novel.

Long and wide leaves with a unique aromatic profile. Low strength with medium intensity and a slightly spicy character. Cultivated in the Recôncavo Baiano region where climate and soil create perfect growing conditions.

Mata Norte
Smaller leaves with good strength, intense and sweet flavor. Grown in drier regions with more sun and less humidity, resulting in more pronounced flavors with hints of sweetness.
